Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Smith
What can I say about the Atlanta Hawks that hasn't been said already.
As I sit and watch the game as it is now at halftime, I can't help but notice that this team needs to be revamped. Their core group of guys have been together long enough to notice that the team needs to move in a different direction.
Josh Smith in particular should go ahead and part ways with his hometown of Atlanta. I remember the discussion arising that he may want to leave when he becomes a free agent. I think the move would actually be great for both he and the organization. Or maybe Joe Johnson should relocate elsewhere.
They simply cannot get the job done with their current roster. Honestly, they need a real all-star that can carry the team. Both Smith and Johnson seem like they would be outstanding complementary players on a championship contender.
The way the Hawks are set up, Joe Johnson is supposedly their 'go to guy', but after his performance in the Celtic stomping in game 4, he clearly does not fit the part. There is no way that your star player should only attempt 8 shots by the end of the game. The puzzling part of the ordeal is that he was 4 of 8 from the field, so it's not like he was struggling. He actually shot the ball well when he did. The Celtic's lead almost shot up to 40 points. That's when I would expect Johnson to fire away. But he did not and ended up with a lowly 9 points. For Johnson to be making as much money as he did due to free agency, he has sort of an obligation to be 'the guy'.
Josh Smith is evidently becomming the clear cut bright spot for the Hawks, but he's still not the scoring machine that the Hawks desperately need. The fact is that the Atlanta Hawks have stars, but no real superstar.
After their season is over (which may well be tonight) what direction will this team follow. Hopefully they will not try the same formula that they are currently using. These early playoff exits are getting old.
